Promotion Tests
Beyond our Puppy and Adult Dog Beginner Classes, the Club offers incrementally more challenging training in Classes 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Progression from Puppy Class to Week 4 of Adult Dog Beginners and from Adult Beginners to Class 1 is automatic at the end of 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the stream joined. From then on, promotion tests must be passed for progression to the more advanced classes.
Your Instructor will advise you on the requirements for each test. Please see the training dates for scheduled promotion tests.
The following provides a summary of the promotion test requirements:
Class 1 to 2:
- Heeling on loose lead, normal pace
- All turns, normal pace
- Automatic Sits (3 from 5)
- Stand and Down on command without physical force
- Stand for Examination by Instructor (not fail for moving, only aggression)
- Recall and Finish around handler (not perfect)
- 30 second Sit Stay and 1 minute Down Stay on lead
Class 2 to 3:
- Heel on loose lead, all paces
- All turns at normal pace
- Automatic Sits (3 from 5)
- Sit, Stand and Down on command without physical force
- Stand for Exam on loose lead, handler in front (minor movement allowed)
- 10 foot lead Recall and finish around handler
- 1 minute Sit and 2 minute Down Stays
Class 3 to 4:
- Heeling perfection, all paces
- Heeling off lead, normal pace
- Automatic Sits
- Sit, Stand and Down on command, all paces
- Stand for Exam off lead, handler in front
- 20 foot Recall off lead and finish around handler
- 1 minute Sit and 3 minute Down Stays, off lead
Class 4 onwards:
- Class 4 - One pass in Novice Obedience Dog Trial or Club equivalent, if dog and handler ready. Otherwise wait until Novice Title gained
- Class 5 - One pass in Open Obedience Dog Trial or Club equivalent, if dog and handler ready. Otherwise wait until Open Title gained
- Class 6 - Utility Dog Obedience Title
Note: Beyond Class 4 the Club offers experienced Instructor and peer-to-peer assistance for handlers wishing to train their dogs for Open and Utility Dog Obedience Trialing.
